Upon the death of their father Andrew John Grierson, the first Laird of the Grierson of Quendale family estate, at sea in March 1766, James, the elder brother of Andrew, at about six years of age, became successor to Andrew John Grierson, and served as his heir on September 24th 1767 becoming the second Laird of the Grierson of Quendale family estate.

Almost nothing further is recorded concerning the life of James, and he appears to also have died at a relatively young age. Andrew succeeded him and served as his heir on March 17th 1807, becoming the third Laird of the Grierson of Quendale family esate. Andrew further served as heir to his great-grandfather, Andrew Greig, on November 11th 1825, acquiring extensive lands in the parish of Aithsting.

Andrew was elected in 1818 to the first Lerwick Town Council.

Upon Andrew's death on 30 June 1835, he was succeeded by his eldest son James who became the fourth laird of the Grierson of Quendale family estate.
