Template:Settlement Brae is a village in the north Mainland of Shetland. It is located at the northeast end of Busta Voe, near the narrow isthmus that separates the mainland from Northmavine, with the main A970 road forming the main street of the village.
The name is derived from a crofting township which grew up on the east shore of Busta Voe in the mid 1800s

Although "Brae" is the Scots language word for hill. The word 'Brae' in Shetland dialect has a different meaning; it comes from the Old Norse word breiðr meaning broad.

Brae remained a relatively small settlement until the 1970s when, with the construction of the nearby Sullom Voe Oil Terminal, housing estates were built to house incoming workers. The population has now stabilised at around 1200.
Given the density of population, Brae has become the centre for many essential services in the north Mainland area such as, Police and Fire Stations, NHS Health Centre, North Haven Care Centre, Brae High School, and the North Mainland Leisure Centre.
