James Andrew 'Ooie Jeemie' Smith (b. 11 July 1877, Mid Yell, d. 18 April 1943, Lerwick) was a shopkeeper and Lerwick Town Councillor from 1934 to 1941, as provost from 1936 until his resignation in 1941.

He unsuccessfully contested the Yell South seat in the 1932 County Council election.

His brother in law John Leslie was also a Councillor and his daughter, Patricia, was married to Major Bill Anderson

Biography

He first had a wool and hosiery business in his native island of Yell, and moved after World War I to set up in Lerwick.

He was a founder and President of the Shetland Woollen Industry Association, whose principal aim was the protection of Shetland's hand-knitted industry by means of a trademark.
