William Thomson (b. 29 October 1906, Swinister, Sandwick, d. 22 December 1959, Sandwick), went in to business as a car hirer at Swinster, Sandwick sometime before 1923, which developed in to goods and passenger carrying work when a Model T Ford was purchased in or around that year. The business bought its first bus in 1936 and traded under the name "Thomson" until 1962 when it merged with the fellow Sandwick bus operator "P. J. Smith" to become the "Sandwick Transport Co." In 1940 he bought the business of "Thomson's Motor Garage" in Lerwick from Charlie Thomson, situated on the Esplanade (now demolished}, which continued trading under the same business name and went on to become a Vauxhall - Bedford dealership.

He was County Councillor for Sandwick between 1935 and 1955.
