Erling Johan Fredrik Clausen (b. 3 June 1904, 16 Christines Gade, Bergen, d. 28 Jun 1984, Lerwick) was an insurance supervisor and Lerwick Town Councillor. His father, Frederick Wilhelm Clausen, was a Norwegian shipbroker who married Elizabeth Stout.

Biography

Erling worked in the insurance industry, starting in 1927. By 1930, he was promoted to the rank of assistant superintendent for Orkney and Shetland.

In 1937, he was appointed to be in charge of Caithness, Orkney and Shetland, and moved to Thurso, where he also join the Council there.

In 1942, he was appointed to the rank of Pilot Officer in Thurso Air Training Corps. He was again promoted to superintendent and moved to Aberdeen in 1945 where he was the district manager. In 1951, he became the manager of the Aberdeen South district, where he continued working at the Prudential Assurance Co. Ltd. until 1964. Upon retirement, he moved back to Shetland.

He was a keen historian, contributing articles to the newspaper such as an article titled Shetland's Folk Have Long Proud Story in the Press and Journal on 17 June 1948. He was the district secretary of the Viking Society for Northern Research in 1954.
