George Reid Tait (b. 1828, Lerwick, d. 7 July 1889, Lerwick) was a draper, shipping agent and Lerwick Town Councillor between 1856 and 1862, and again between 1874 and 1876, with the final 3 years as the junior baillie.

He was the father of Lerwick councillor Edwyn Tait.

Biography

At the age of 14, George started working at his father, Laurence's shop. He eventually took over the business and ran it for a long period. After retiring from that position, he spent a few years in retirement before returning to work as a draper and shipping agent, which he continued doing until his death. After the resignation of Charles Laurenson, Tait was appointed as the Belgian Consul at Lerwick. He was Master of the Viking Lodge of Masons. Politically, he was described as "lattery a Conservative".
