James Adie
James Arthur Adie (b. 19 September 1875, Delting, d. 4 May 1948, Edinburgh) was a merchant and a County Councillor for Delting South between 1903 and 1907. His father, William Adie had resigned from the seat in February 1903, and James was appointed in April.
He unsuccessfully contested the Delting South seat in the 1907 County Council election.
Biography
James worked in the Adie family business in Voe until the 1920s. He married Hanka Lange, the daughter of Alexander Lange who managed the Olna whaling station, and the couple moved to Norway for some years. James then returned to the UK, before heading out to Antarctica with a whaling company. The couple eventually settled in North Berwick, where James became a partner in a firm that built wooden houses. During WWII, James served in Shetland in charge of the Home Office camp for Norwegian refugees, a role that Hanka was heavily involved in too.
