The '''[[1961]] [[Lerwick Town Council]] By-Election''' occurred on May 5. 

Rev. Kenneth Thomson was elected just four days before but his nomination was deemed to be invalid as he was in employment with the Anderson Educational Institute as a part-time teacher, an undeclared conflict of interest based on section 52 of the Local Government (Scotland) 1947 Act. Thomson was offered the option of resigning and standing soon thereafter, but he turned down this option and thus the council appointed Robert Strachan, who had failed to get elected at the election but had gained the highest number of votes among those who also did not. Due to this, Thomson holds the shortest time in council history across nearly 200 years.
