William James Greig (b. 18 December 1857, Unst, d. 23 December 1919, Lerwick) was a house painter, hairdresser and County Councillor for Lerwick North in 1919. His tenure as a councillor lasted only three weeks, as he died on 23 December.
He unsuccessfully contested the 1906 Lerwick Town Council election.
Biography
William came to Lerwick aged 9 where he attended a parish school, and later the Anderson Educational Institute. After leaving work, he began working as a painter with a John Stopani, before heading to Edinburgh where he continued to develop his trade for some years.
Upon his return to Shetland, he opened his own painting business, and later opened a hairdresser on Montyhooly Street. The latter business eventually was moved to Charlotte Street, where he worked for 30 years.
