Iris Hawkins
Iris Jean Hawkins (b. 21 November 1946, Tingwall) is a former Shetland Islands Councillor for the Shetland Central ward.
On October 27 2011, Hawkins announced her resignation due to impending marriage.
Political Career
Hawkins was first elected in 1994 to the Scalloway ward as an independent, beating David Nicolson, also independent, Ian Scott, and William Anderson, a Shetland Movement candidate. In 1999 she retained the seat, beating John M. Burgess, independent, and Ian Scott. She once again had to contest her seat at the 2003 election with Ian Scott, both as independents, and won comfortably. When in 2007 the council boundaries were completely redefined, Hawkins stood for Shetland Central, a three-member ward and was elected with Betty Fullerton and Andrew J. Hughson.
Hawkins was appointed as vice-chairperson of the SIC Infrastructure Committee in 2007 following the election. On September 15 2009 when Allan Wishart stood down as the chairman of the SIC Infrastructure committee, Hawkins was voted as the chairperson, beating Jonathan Wills by 18 votes to 4.
