Sinclair Johnson (b. 16 August 1863, Aithsting, d. 23 March 1927, New Zealand) was a draper and Lerwick Town Councillor between 1899 and 1907.

Biography

Sinclair was born in Aithsting and upon leaving school moved to Lerwick and began working as an assistant to William Irvine, a job he held for several years. After William gave up the business, Sinclair entered employment with Frederick Adie until the 1880s, when Fred left Shetland for Canada. Thereafter, Sinclair opened his own business, as a draper and clothier under the name Sinclair Johnson & Co, which he ran until he left Shetland for New Zealand.

He took a keen interest in the herring fishery, and part-owned some boats, although this arm of his business was not overall a success.

In politics, he was an enthusiastic Liberal.

Upon his death in 1927, he charitably bequeathed £10,000 to Hawke's Bay Children's Home, Napier; Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick; Agnes Weston's Sailor's Rest, Portsmouth and Dr. Barnardo's Home in London.
