John Robertson

John 'o da Trance' Robertson (b. 25 March 1826, Lerwick, d. 2 February 1905, Lerwick) was a spirit merchant, grocer and also had a lengthy spell as a Lerwick Town Councillor, initially from 1859 until 1874, then again from 1878 to 1905, a total of 42 years. In the Town Council minutes and the election results he is listed as 'John Robertson Jr', this is due to another John Robertson, an uncle to Robertson, who was in office during a similar period of time.

Besides the general business of a merchant, John was involved in fishcuring at North Ness and Levenwick (both white fish and herring).

In politics, he was a Liberal.

His death caused the Lerwick Town Council by-election in 1905.
