William Kenneth Conochie (b. 25 November 1898, Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, d. 12 October 1969, Lerwick) was a stationer who founded the Conochies shop on Commercial Street, which is still open today. He was also a Lerwick Town Councillor between 1949 and 1963.

He unsuccessfully contested the 1932 Lerwick Town Council election.

Biography

William arrived in Shetland in 1922 to take over the business of George Anderson in Commercial Street. He continued to grow the business, retiring in 1967.

Between wars, William wat a member of the British Legion and a pipe major in the band. He was a reserve officer and was called up during WWII, and spent time with the Shetland Defence Battalion, the Royal Army Service Corps in Orkney, Inverness and latterly the Highland Division.
