James Goudie

James Mouat Goudie (b. 6 May 1851, Lerwick, d. 17 October 1928, Lerwick) was an ironmonger, Lerwick Town Councillor between 1888 and 1907, spending the last three years (1904-7) as Provost, and County Councillor for Lerwick South between 1892 and 1901, then from 1901 to 1904 for Cunningsburgh.
He was offered the opportunity to fill the a vacancy at the 1880 Lerwick Town Council election but turned the offer down.
His grandfather, James, and his uncle James Mouat were also Lerwick Town Councillors.

James was educated at the Anderson Educational Institute. He developed an early interest in antiquities, and he assembled a large book collection about Shetland was acquired by Lerwick Town Council, and is now in the Shetland Archives
James's father Robert had established an ironworks in Lerwick in 1821. The business became a partnership and was known as Messrs R. Goudie & Son. After Robert's death in 1869, James continued with the business until the 1920s when McGowan Scott was made a junior partner.
He was the joint secretary of the Shetland Literary and Scientific Society and was made an honorary sheriff of the county in 1907. On 6 March 1894, he was added to the roll of Justices for the Peace for the County.
He was a Liberal, politically.
