Zetland County Council

The Zetland County Council ZCC was established as the result of Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. The first election was held on Tuesday 4 February, 1890, and the body lasted until 1975. It was replaced by the Shetland Islands Council on May 1st 1974, following a merger with the Lerwick Town Council.

History

The ZCC was formed following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889, which also formed District Councils (which we now know as Community Councils). As it represented a much larger area than the Lerwick-based Town Council, it had a greater number of councillors; up to 27. Initially, it did elect County Councillors for Lerwick, but this practise was abolished from the 1932 election onward. The body was led by a convenor and vice convenor, while later other positions were added, such as Treasurer and Dean of Guild.
