Aithsting County Council By-Election April 1890
From Shetland History Online
The 1890 Aithsting County Council By-Election occurred on 14 April. This particular election was the subject of much controversy because both the Sandsting and Aithsting elections were deemed to be illegitimate by the council.
In Aithsting, at the 1890 election, James Anderson had defeated William Hay Umphray by 23 votes to 2. Despite this win, a complication with the electoral roll meant that the Council voided both the Aithsting and Sandsting results.
A by-election was called to resolve the issue, and James Anderson narrowly beat Gilbert Williamson by a majority of two votes.
