William Spence (b. 3 September 1782, Hamar, Unst, d. 19 July 1849, Lerwick) was a staff-surgeon and Lerwick Town Councillor.
Biography
William was a staff-surgeon in the Royal Navy, and was a descendent of the Spence of Greenfield family.
He was the first chairman of the fee-paying Subscription School in Lerwick, which operated from 1839 until 1844.
He lived in Greenfield Cottage, near modern day Church Road in Lerwick. William had a chromate ore crushing operation in the garden at the back of the house. His interest in this activity was linked to his daughter, Jane, who married Gilbert Spence of Hammer in Unst, who operated a chromate quarry there.
