John was educated at Burravoe School, and as a young lad moved to Lerwick, first taking up employment with D & G Kay's and Hunter & Sinclair. He returned to Yell to work with Manson & Co in Burravoe, leaving to volunteer for service in the Royal Navy Reserve in WWI. He saw active service throughout the war and upon demobbing, joined the merchant navy. In 1923, when [[Andrew D. Clark]] acquired George Laurence & Co in Ulsta, hired John as manager. In 1953, after 30 years of service, he took over the business.

John Keith Herculson 'Johnnie' Williamson (b. 23 June 1895, Mounthooly Street, Lerwick, d. 1 July 1955, Ulsta, Yell) was a shop manager and a County Councillor for Yell South from 1940 until 1949, then again between 1950 and 1952.

He unsuccessfully contested the Yell South seat in the 1949 County Council election.
