Arthur Alexander Porteous (b. 17 May 1857, Stromness, Orkney, d. 7 July 1935, Gladsmuir, East Lothian) was a chemist with premises in Union Bank and he was also a Lerwick Town Councillor from 1887 to 1910

Biography

Arthur served as an apprentice chemist in Orkney after passing his exams, and became a Member of the Pharmaceutical Society. After working on the Scottish mainland for some time, he came to Lerwick in December 1879 and opened his own shop a chemist. He continued to operate the same business until he retired in 1932.

He was an advocate for education in the isles. Not long after arriving in Shetland, he joined the Lerwick School Board, including holding the role of Chair of that organisation during the 1902 opening of the Lerwick Central School.
