James John Pottinger (b. 20 November 1872, Nesting, d. 12 April 1961, Edinburgh) was a compositor, briefly a Lerwick Town Councillor from 1919 until his resignation in 1921 and a County Councillor for Lerwick Central between 1919 until he resigned in May 1921
His brother, Francis was also a County Councillor.

James was for some time employed by R & R Clark, a printers in Edinburgh. Around 1911, he was elected as President of the Edinburgh and Leith Printing Establishments Association.
