George Burgess
George Henry Burgess O.B.E. (b. 26 November 1894, England, d. 5 April 1969, Lerwick) was a wholesale grocers manager and Lerwick Town Councillor.
Biography
George was educated at the Lerwick Central School, and became an assistant reporter at the Shetland News until he was called to service in WWI with the 7th Gordon Highlanders. He was captured as a prisoner of war in 1918 and remained as such in France until the Armistice. After the war, he returned to the Shetland News, and later joined Messrs Aitken & Wright, wholesale merchants where he became manager, retiring in June 1968.
He received an O.B.E in 1960 connection with his work to expand the Lerwick Harbour.
After the war, George was involved in compiling the 600+ Roll of Honour, and was an official of the Earl Haig Fund, which gave grants to families without a breadwinner.
He was the Lerwick Guizer Jarl in 1922.
