Charles Whyte

Reverend Charles Whyte (b. 1866, Forfar, d. 27 March 1949, Aberdeen) was a Free Church Minister in Dunrossness and a County Councillor for Dunrossness North from August 1898 until December 1898.

Biography

Charles studied first at St Andrew's University then New College. His first posting with the church was in the United Free Church of Dunrossness on 13 October 1892, serving until 2 December 1909 when he was transferred to Towie. He served in various Aberdeenshire parishes before transferring to Kingswell in 1917, where he served for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1947.

In 1919, he received an honorary degree of LL.D from the Lincoln Memorial Presbyterian University in American and was for more than 30 years a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

While in Shetland he took a keen interest in astronomy, and he began writing series of monthly articles for the Press and Journal and published books on the topic.
