Frederick Tait

Frederick Bowie Tait (b. 10 January 1893, Clousta, Aithsting, d. 25 October 1958, Clousta, Aithsting) was a Master Mariner and County Councillor for Aithsting from 1955 until his death in 1958.

His first cousin, James Bowie, was also a Zetland County Councillor.

Biography

Frederick went to sea as soon as he finished school, quickly gaining his mate and master's certificates. As second officer he served for several years in the Ben Line then became a chief with William Thomsons. He would later become captain with the same firm.

In WWII, he captained on the s.s. Boswell, where he had to sail the vessel Mulberry Harbour where it was scuttled to provide shelter. After the war, he was the captain of the Glenlyon between Australia and New Zealand.
