Biography
Joseph only went to formal education for three-quarters of a year. Education at that time was paid, and in a family of six money was scarce.
Joseph began working with the fish trade on the beach at Voe, before setting off to Faroe on the Voe smacks belonging to T. M. Adie & Sons. After a time away from Shetland with the deep sea fishing industry, he returned to Shetland and returned to fishing around Faroe with Messrs Nicolson & Co, Scalloway, as mate and later Skipper of the ship Violet.
As the Faroese fishery trade dwindled, Joseph turned to the herring trade and was employed by John W. Robertson.
When WWI broke out, he joined the Shetland Royal Navy Reserves and served throughout.
In politics, he was a Liberal.
Skipper Joseph Peterson proved the most outstanding success among later day Faroe skippers and a capable navigator.
