Hugh Thomas Sutherland (b. 1 January 1900, Lunnasting, d. 23 March 1976, Weisdale) was a County Councillor initially for Yell North between 1962 and 1967, then for Delting South, and finally for Northmavine South.

Biography

Upon completing his education at the Anderson Educational Institute in 1917, Hugh became the clerk of the local Food Office. In 1919, he moved to the Education Officer where he spent the remainder of his career, retiring in 1962. He was heavily involved in Shetland's voluntary sector, being secretary and later vice president of the committee that founded the local YMCA, also as secretary for the Shetland Football Association and he held the same title for the Shetland Youth Council. Additionally he was Session Clerk of Whiteness and of Tingwall and President of the Tingwall Nursing Association.

He was closely associated with the Whiteness & Weisdale Hall and tragically died just three days before he was due to cut the ribbon of the new venue. He had served on the hall committee for more than 50 years including at times as secretary and chair.
