Thomas Anderson (b. 3 November 1855, Hillswick, d. 19 December 1936, Pahiatua, New Zealand) was a merchant and a livestock breeder, dealer and exporter. He was also a County Councillor first for Northmavine South between 1890 and 1901, then Northmavine North from 1907 to 1913. His mother, Eupehemia Anderson (neé Merrylees) was the daughter of William Merrylees, who was a Lerwick Town Councillor. His cousin Charles was also a councillor in Lerwick.
Biography
Thomas began his working life in his father's shop, Messrs John Anderson & Sons. The extensive business had large fishing interests, both in herring and white fish trade, as well as rearing, dealing and exporting cattle, ponies, sheep and lambs. He became a partner in the business with his brother Gilbert. On the death of their father in 1911, the brothers continued running the business in partnership. Gilbert died in 1919.
As the fishing industry declined, so did Thomas's business. A combination of this decline and the death of Gilbert saw him sell the business to one of his employees, who began trading under Messrs W. S. Manson & Co.
He emigrated to New Zealand in 1922.
