James Johnson

James Robert Johnson (b. 3 December 1891, Northmavine, d. 13 June 1952, Northmavine) was a County Councillor for Northmavine North between 1935 and 1949.

Biography

As a young man, he worked in the Alexandra Bakery in Lerwick. He was one of the original members of the Gordon Highlanders in 1914, and eventually became a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion. He was discharged from the army in 1917 after sustaining severe injuries near Monchy le Preux while fighting in the Battle of Arras. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the French Croix de Guerre.

After returning to Shetland, he became the manager of D & G Kay's in Burravoe. When his first wife died in 1923, he returned to Northmavine and took up croft work.
