William Pole (b. 19 December 1839, North Yell, d. 30 July 1921, Mossbank, Delting) was a general merchant and a County Councillor for Delting North between 1904 and 1907.

His youngest child, Joseph, was also a county councillor for the same area between 1922 and 1945.

Biography

William worked with Captain Craigie in the laying of roads in Shetland, and he was involved in the first ever Valuation Roll of Shetland. Later, he joined the Union Bank, before joining his father's firm in Greenbank, Yell. In 1864, he moved to Mossbank and joined the business of James Hoseason. When James died, Robert Hoseason returned from Australia and with William they formed Pole, Hoseason and Co. Eventually, one of his sons took over when William retired.
