William Smith (i)

William Smith (b. 27 November 1871, Sandwick, d. 2 April 1949, Sandwick) was a merchant and a County Councillor for Sandwick between 1904 and 1910.

Biography

William served his apprenticeship with Andrew Smith, but moved to Johannesburg around the age of 21. He returned to Shetland after the death of his father in 1896 and took over the family business. He kept running the business until 1927.

During WWI he attained the rank of Paymaster-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve, and had a number of further public appointments such as the Broonie's Taing Pier Trust and the Recreation Club and Public Hall committees of Sandwick.
