William Smith (ii)

William Spence Smith (b. 15 April 1849, Lerwick, d. 23 April 1920, Lerwick) was a draper, founder of Smith & Robertson, and a Lerwick Town Councillor between 1907 until his resignation in 1916. His father Ross Smith was also a Lerwick Town councillor.
He unsuccessfully contested the 1876 and 1905 Lerwick Town Council election.
Biography
After leaving school, William started work in the booksellers shop of Charles D. Jamieson. Later, he worked with George Reid Tait where he worked closely with seafarers, especially whalers.
He spent a short time in Edinburgh, but otherwise lived his whole life in Lerwick. He started Smith & Robertsons with Hugh Robertson, a drapers and outfitters.
