John Bannatyne Anderson (b. 26 April 1852, Lerwick, d. 16 March 1938, Lerwick) was a solicitor and County Councillor who represented Lerwick North between the years of 1890 and 1901, Northmavine South from 1901 to 1904 and Sandsting, 1904-1907. He was also a Lerwick Town Councillor between 1886 and 1891.
His brother, Robert, was a Lerwick Town Councillor.
Biography
John was educated at the Anderson Institute and went to Edinburgh in 1869 aged 17 to take legal training. He served an apprenticeship and studied law while in Edinburgh, and was admitted as a law agent on 10 January 1882. He returned to Shetland and started his own firm at Anderson Place, before moving to 58 Commercial Street.
Although on the County Council he elected to the Lerwick North seat, he transferred in 1901 to Northmavine South as Lerwick members were excluded from parts of the County business in which Lerwick had no interest.
He retired from his firm in 1935 and his business was taken over by [Peter Goodlad https://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I33828&tree=ID1], under the name J. B. Anderson & Goodlad.
Politically, John was a Liberal and was the local Liberal Agent for a number of years.
He was described by the Shetland Times as "one of Shetland's most prominent and most respected sons" when he died in 1938.
