David Sutherland

David Sutherland (b. 1 October 1850, Colvadale, Unst, d. 2 October 1929, Lerwick) was a watchmaker and a County Councillor for Sandness between 1904 and 1921.

Biography

David grew up on Unst and came to Lerwick around 1880 where he started a watchmaker and jewellery business. He was noted as having a keen interest in scientific matters and was an early authority in Shetland on telephone technology.

In later life, he leaned into socialism and became an advocate for laying out a garden city in Lerwick.

A stroke he suffered in 1920 kept him confined to his bed for the last 9 years of his life.
