Herbert Foster Anderton (b. January 1862, Bradford, d. 16 November 1937, Vaila) built the stately home on the Isle of Vaila in 1895 and was a County Councillor for Sandness between 1895 and 1898.

Biography

Herbert came to Shetland around 1892, where he bought the estates of Melby and Vaila. He used Vaila House as a summer home for many years, but in his latter years he had made it his permanent residence.
