His family were removed from their Kergord property during The Clearings and as a young boy he worked as a fisherman in Shetland and Greenland, before later joining what we now call the Merchant navy, sailing to America to work in the wood trade. He then transferred to a steam vessel in Australia and travelled as far and wide as the Solomon Islands. Captain James Anderson (b. 27 May 1858, Kergord, Weisdale, d. 25 April 1934, Bixter) was a master mariner and a County Councillor for Aithsting from 1928 until his resignation in 1932.
Biography
In his Shetland Times obituary, James was described as "the best kind of Shetlander - sturdy, independent, kindly, yet determined to make the best of life." His family were removed from their Kergord property during The Clearings and as a young boy he worked as a fisherman in Shetland and Greenland, before later joining what we now call the Merchant navy, sailing to America to work in the wood trade. He then transferred to a steam vessel in Australia and travelled as far and wide as the Solomon Islands. Upon the death of his father, who was also a councillor, he returned to Shetland to manage the family farm in Aithness.
His father, James and brother Thomas were also councillors.
