County Council Election December 1932
The 1932 County Council Election occurred on Tuesday 6 December. This election was the first county council election since the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 came into effect on May 1930. This resulted in Lerwick Central, North and South combining to become Lerwick Landward (shown here), a five seat district council ward.
The legislation defined Burghs are 'large' or 'small', with a burgh requiring a population of 20,000 or more to classify as 'large'. Lerwick Landward was a 'small burgh' and as such, much of its powers remained with the Zetland County Council.
Given that the new District council had reduced powers, the Shetland History Online database will not log any further elections beyond 1932. The reason that 1932 is highlighted below is because it produced the first female councillor, Elizabeth Tait. Given that Tait was elected unopposed and that the new district council had reduced status, this database recognises Charlotte Nicol as the first full female councillor in Shetland. Not only was she elected on to an existing council, she placed fourth in the 1933 Lerwick Town Council election as a Ratepayers Association candidate, receiving 880 votes in the process.
For this election, Sandwick was also abolished by the new legislation and absorbed into Cunningsburgh and Dunrossness, but this change was reversed and Sandwick returned as a constituency in 1935.
