William Shand
William Murdoch Shand (b. 26 February 1843, Old Machar, Aberdeen, d. 6 December 1929, Lerwick) was a shipping agent and County Councillor for Gulberwick between 1901 and 1910, and later Sandwick between 1911 and 1913.
He unsuccessfully contested the Gulberwick seat in the 1910 County Council election.
Biography
William was the son of a miller and grain merchant, and worked for some time in the Aberdeen offices of the North of Scotland and Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company, reaching the position of cashier. He was appointed as agent for the firm in Lerwick in 1878, succeeding Charles Merrylees, who moved to the Aberdeen branch to be a Manager. William continued as Agent until he retired in 1906 and was succeeded by William Merrylees.
He was a Director of the Lerwick Gaslight Company.
