The constituency of Lerwick North first begun electing in 1890 for the County Council until 1929 when the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 got rid of the Lerwick constituencies from the County Council for the 1932 election. When the Town Council and Zetland County Council merged to form the Shetland Islands Council, Lerwick Central once again became a constituency between the years of 1974 and 1999.
