William John Sutherland (b. 26 May 1876, Leons, Sand, Sandsting, d. 18 March 1959, Brevik Hospital, Lerwick) was was a County Councillor first for Nesting from 1935 until 1938, then Aithsting between 1945 and 1955 and finally Delting North between 1955 and 1958.
Biography
He used the name John rather than William primarily. His obituary in the Shetland News does not make mention of the name William.
He was a Road Surveyor for the North Isles District when appointed interim Road Surveyor for the County and Mainland District in 1915. In 1919, he was appointed Assistant County Road Surveyor to R. S. W. Paterson and when the latter left Shetland in 1923, John was appointed as County Road Surveyor in November 1923 and kept that role until he retired in June 1935.
He was a member of the Education Authority from 1919 until 1938, and again from 1945 until 1958.
His obituary describes him as being "forthright in his criticisms at the Council and Committee tables, and any business which did not meet with his approval was "ruthlessly condemned". Despite this, he maintained a "strong strain of humour".
He unsuccessfully contested the Nesting seat at the 1938 County Council election, the Unst South seat in the 1942 Unst South by-election and the 1959 Aithsting by-election, less than 40 days before he died.
He unsuccessfully contested the 1935 Lerwick Town Council election.
